RQ: How can parental, academic and social aspects exacerbate mental health issues in teenagers?
Mental illness: Introduction
Mental health describes ideas pertaining to psychological well-being and is an integral component of health. According to the World Health Organisation, “health is a state of physical, mental, and social well-being”. Mental illnesses impact one’s behaviour, examples would be depression, anxiety, addictions etc.
Historically, abnormal behaviour was thought as supernatural forces, determined religion. For example, bipolar diseases were thought to be demonic possessions and based on one’s sex; females were thought to have ‘hysteria’ and didn’t have power because of this.
Prime examples of contemporary approaches to mental health are the rise in teenage mental illness rates, specifically how it's neglected. These are due to social media, parental and early childhood and academic pressures.
